Gazelle Sports and the Kalamazoo Area Runners are proud to host Run Through the Lights to benefit Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Join us for a festive fun run or walk through the holiday lights of downtown Kalamazoo! Run Through the Lights is an un-timed, non-competitive run/walk and everyone is invited. Streets will be closed. 

NEW THIS YEAR - PLEASE NOTE:

The race has a new start and end spot- in Bronson Park! We hope this will give people more space to mingle, and we will be able to visit Candy Cane Lane! 

All participants ARE REQUIRED to bring and wear lights and reflective gear this year! We love safe runners and walkers!

This fun event is growing and to ensure your safety, we will have staggered starts for runners, walkers and anyone with strollers. 

We love your pets too - but for this year's event,  we ask that you leave them at home to keep everyone safe on this busy downtown night of crowds and fun in the lights!

There will also be special contests with fabulous prizes to be won!

In the spirit of giving, we also ask that you bring a non-perishable or canned food item(s), which will be donated to the Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes is the largest food assistance provider in Kalamazoo County and fed over 126,000 individuals last year. Please bring food and/or monetary donations with you to the event to help feed hungry people in our community. Representatives from the charity organization will be there to collect donations. Last year we gathered 1,418 lbs. of food for Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, and we look to collect more for 2014. Please make a difference for your neighbors in need and help us reach our goal!

Help us work toward a hunger-free Kalamazoo County by donating food items on race night! We really are in need of the following items at this time of year:

Canned meat/fruit/vegetables
Canned soups
 Canned stews

Registration: Online registration closes at noon on Wednesday December 3. After this time paper registration will be available at Gazelle Sports and at the event for $15 without shirt and $30 with a shirt. Children 12 and under are free of charge without a shirt and $15 with a shirt.

Paper Registration: Packet pick up will be held at Gazelle Sports on Wednesday December 3rd from 4-7pm. At this time you will get your race bib, shirt (if ordered) and other important race information. You can also get your packet on Thursday December 4th at Bronson Park starting at 5pm. 

Refunds/Transfers: Please note there will be no refunds or transfers for this event, including cancellation due to extreme weather conditions.

Staging Area and Start/Finish: New this year, we will have a Race Tent located a short walk from Gazelle Sports in Bronson Park. This is where the race will start and end, and it will also be where you can pick up your packet on race day. 

Volunteer

Volunteers make this event happen! Please join us on the course or at the event to facilitate this year's Run Through the Lights. Together we can make this one of the brightest, most exciting holiday events this year!

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
• Set-up First Shift (3:30 pm - 4:30 pm)
Individuals are needed to set up tents, tables, hang banners, and other set up as needed (3-5 volunteers needed)
• Set-up Second Shift (4:30 pm - 5:30 pm)
Individuals are needed to place course markers, prepare food/refreshments, and other set up as needed (3-5 volunteers needed)
• Course Marshals (6:00 pm - 7:30 pm) **BIGGEST NEED** 
Individuals are needed to provide direction on the course. Bring some noisemakers, lights, good cheer and dress in festive attire for this fun volunteer opportunity. Cell phone required. (15-20 volunteers needed)
• Refreshments/Tear Down (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm) Greet participants at the finish and provide refreshments. Direct participants to post-race events and help tear down after festivities have concluded. (5-8 volunteers needed)

FAQ

Is it safe to run in the dark?

Every effort is being made to ensure your safety with a well lit, planned & marshaled course.

Every participant must wear reflective gear and lights for the event.


What are the costs?

WITH SHIRT

$30...............Ages 13 and up

Can I sign up at the event?

Yes and you may pay by cash or check made out to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes.


What is the route and how long is the race?

We have a new course this year - soon to be posted, and this fun run is approximately 2.5 miles in length.


Is the course closed?

Roads are closed and fully marshaled for your safety by Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers and trained volunteers.


Is the race still on if the weather is bad?

In order to provide a safe experience for all participants and volunteers, we have created a process for managing severe weather in conjunction with the event.

Weather forecasts are tracked before the event for snow, freezing/heavy rain, high winds and extreme cold. If there is a possibility of threatening weather, please tune into WWMT (Channel 3) . Information will also be posted here on the Run Through the Lights web site.  If it is possible to adequately predict a severe weather event, announcements regarding cancellation will be made by noon on the event day.  The event will go on in light rain or snow.

What kind of food donations should I bring?

At this time of year, Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes is really in need of high protein items such as canned meat/fruit/vegetables and soups and stews.

Can I get a refund?

Please note there will be no refunds or transfers for this event, including cancellation due to extreme weather conditions.


Are dogs/strollers allowed?

While strollers are allowed this year, we regret that for safety issues, pets are NOT permitted at the event. Participants with strollers will start to the rear of the pack when we start the fun run - again to ensure the safety of all involved.

Is it a run/walk?

This is an un-timed fun run, jog or walk for anyone of any age and ability.


What times do the various event activities take place?

5:30pm   Late registration will be begin on site at 5:30pm


6:30pm   Race will start with a staggered start (runners and joggers first, followed

                         walkers and then participants with strollers.

            

7:15pm    (Approx) Post run warm up with some hot chocolate and soups

                         while contest winners are announced and fabulous door prizes 

                         are given away!
